AT A GLANCE

Claude Duet in brief.

PRODUCT Claude Duet
MODEL Proactive AI Agent
ECOSYSTEM 6,000+ Connectors & Plugins

On October 21, 2026, Anthropic introduced Claude Duet, a research preview of a new proactive AI agent designed for professionals and small business owners.

And the most important part of the announcement is not another improvement in model intelligence.

It is a change in the relationship between people and AI.

Traditional AI waits.

You open the application. You ask a question. You provide instructions. You receive an answer.

Claude Duet is designed to work differently.

It can monitor connected applications, identify what may require attention, continue working while the user is away and return when a decision or approval is required.

For businesses, that is a significant shift.

01

From AI that responds to AI that acts.

Most generative AI tools have been based around a familiar interaction model.

A person asks.

The AI responds.

Claude Duet begins to change that model.

Anthropic describes it as a proactive agent that can continue working on its own cloud-based computer, even after the user closes the application.

Each morning, it can review information across connected applications and prepare a brief of what requires attention.

During the day, it can continue monitoring those applications, follow ongoing work and notify the user when intervention becomes necessary.

Users can also delegate larger tasks, including research, financial models, dashboards, presentations and other multi-step work.

We are moving from “ask AI to help” towards “give AI an objective and let it work.”

02

AI begins to understand your working environment.

Claude Duet builds on the context already available inside a user’s Claude account.

That includes memory, skills and connected applications.

More importantly for businesses, Anthropic says Claude Duet can work with more than 6,000 connectors and plugins available through the Claude ecosystem.

This allows the agent to work across many of the systems businesses already use rather than requiring employees to continually move information manually from one application to another.

COMMUNICATION Gmail & Slack Find missed messages and prepare replies for review.
FINANCE QuickBooks & Stripe Identify unpaid invoices and prepare follow-up reminders.
SALES HubSpot Use contact and deal history to prepare customer follow-ups.
HR Recruiting Workflows Prepare job postings and support recruitment-related tasks.
OPERATIONS Business Applications Work across connected systems without employees continuously switching between tools.
COMMERCE Shopify Support store setup, management and operational workflows.
03

The real productivity opportunity is coordination.

A significant amount of work inside companies is not especially difficult.

It is fragmented.

Someone checks an email.

Then opens the CRM.

Then checks the calendar.

Then updates a spreadsheet.

Then sends a message.

Then waits.

Then follows up.

Then prepares a report.

Each individual action may take only a few minutes.

Across hundreds of employees and thousands of workflows, however, that coordination creates significant operational cost.

Proactive AI agents begin to address this layer of work.

The next productivity gain may not come from completing individual tasks faster. It may come from having fewer tasks humans need to continuously track.

04

Attention becomes the new interface.

One of the most interesting concepts behind Claude Duet is that the user should not need to monitor everything.

The agent attempts to determine what requires human attention and what can continue without intervention.

This changes the productivity question.

Instead of asking:

“How can AI help me complete more tasks?”

businesses can begin asking:

“Which tasks should people no longer need to continuously monitor?”

For executives, managers and business owners, this distinction is particularly important.

Their most constrained resource is often not the ability to type faster or create another document.

It is attention.

05

More autonomy means more governance.

As AI systems become capable of taking actions, the risk model changes.

An AI system summarising a document is one thing.

An AI agent capable of reading emails, interacting with business applications, preparing payments, sending communications or working inside operational systems is another.

Anthropic has therefore designed Claude Duet to stop and request approval before consequential actions such as sending messages, making payments, signing documents or deleting information.

Anthropic has also implemented protections around credentials, sensitive information and prompt-injection attacks.

These technical controls matter.

But they do not replace organisational governance.

GOVERNANCE QUESTIONS Technology controls are only one layer.

Businesses still need to define access, responsibilities, approval rules, accountability, monitoring and escalation processes around AI agents.

06

AI Training must move beyond prompting.

For the last few years, much of corporate AI training has focused on prompts.

How to ask better questions.

How to provide context.

How to generate better outputs.

Those skills still matter.

But proactive agents require something more.

Employees must learn how to delegate work, define objectives, establish boundaries, review progress and recognise when AI should not make the final decision.

Managers will need to understand how responsibilities should be divided between humans and AI.

That includes approval structures, access rights, quality controls, escalation and accountability.

The question is moving from “How do I prompt AI?” to “How do I manage work when AI agents are part of the team?”

07

The technology is still early.

Claude Duet is currently a research preview.

Anthropic explicitly notes that the system may still misread conversations or incorrectly judge what is urgent.

Current access is also limited.

During the research preview, Claude Duet is available through a waitlist to Pro and Max subscribers in the United States.

It is not currently available for Claude Team or Enterprise plans.

This means businesses should not interpret Claude Duet as a finished enterprise deployment platform today.

They should instead view it as a strong signal of where AI products are moving.

The competitive advantage will not be access.

Claude Duet is one example of a wider market direction.

AI assistants are becoming agents.

Agents are becoming more proactive.

They are gaining access to more business systems.

And they are becoming capable of working for longer periods without continuous human prompting.

If these capabilities become widely available, simply having access to an agent will not create a sustainable competitive advantage.

Implementation will.

Same AI technology. Different workflows. Different adoption. Completely different business outcomes.

SHIFT WORKS PERSPECTIVE

Buying AI is easy. Redesigning work around it is harder.

At Shift Works, this is why we separate AI technology from AI transformation.

A company does not simply need access to Claude Duet or another AI agent.

It needs to understand where employees currently spend time, which processes create unnecessary friction, which decisions require human judgment and which systems contain the information required to perform the work.

It then needs to decide what can safely be delegated, what must remain controlled, how employees should work with the technology and how the organisation will measure whether anything actually improved.

Only then should the technology be configured around the business.

Understand → Identify → Design → Configure → Train → Measure → Scale
WHAT COMES NEXT?

From AI Assistant to AI Workforce Infrastructure.

Claude Duet is still early.

But the direction is increasingly clear.

AI assistants are becoming AI agents.

AI agents are becoming proactive.

Proactive agents are connecting to business systems.

And when agents can continuously work across those systems, AI begins to become part of the infrastructure through which work gets done.

That transition will require powerful technology.

But it will also require better processes, stronger governance, trained people and leaders capable of redesigning organisations around new capabilities.

The next generation of enterprise AI will not simply answer employees faster. It will increasingly work alongside them.

SHIFT WORKS · AI TRANSFORMATION

AI agents are coming. Is your business ready to use them?

Shift Works helps organisations understand where AI can create measurable value, redesign processes, prepare their people, configure the technology and turn AI adoption into operational capability.
